Feed the world! We keep hearing how the population on earth will be increasing substantially in the next 25 years. What if we look at the current food stream and look at the food waste we are creating. Are you aware that the United States throws away more than 34 million tons of food a year? Check out this video to learn more.
Here are a few processes we should be talking about more:
- Turning food waste into compost. – Check out what White Castle is doing with respect to turning food waste into compost in Columbus, Ohio
- Smaller portion sizes at restaurants – See how some restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen, T.G.I.Friday’s and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse are adding new items to their menus with smaller portions.
- Average American Food Waste – Are Americans spending enough time with respect to meal planning, grocery purchases and proper training in food storage and food handling?
The truth is that everyone is to blame for this issue of food waste and it will take all of us to make a difference. The concern I have is that right now this topic is not at the forefront of anyone’s goals. Instead, too many people are only looking at this topic from an industry perspective instead of an “everyone” perspective. Until this way of thinking occurs, this topic will only get worse.
